Performace Horses

Our Foundation

This page is to give a brief overview of the sires we have selected to be the foundation of our breeding program. Not all of them are World Champions, but were great horses in their own right and have been proven sires thoughout the years. We hope you enjoy this brief history lesson!

King p234 AQHA

Mark Twain said "If I can't smoke cigars in heaven, I'm not going." Legions of Quarter Horse "persons" have said if it doesn't have KING in the pedigree, "I ain't riding it!"

King was foaled in 1932, some eight years before the formation of the Quarter Horse registry. He was purchased by Jess Hankins for $800 in 1937.  King was a 5 year old stallion when Jess bought him, then becoming King's third owner. He had been used for roping, general ranch work, and had sired a few foals by this time.King was blood bay and he had a magnificent hair coat. When he shed out in the spring, gold flecks appeared, giving him an unusual sheen. He was quick to learn, easy to get along with, and possessed plenty of cow sense. King, at maturity stood between 14.2 to 15 hands, well muscled and weighed from 1,150 to 1,200 pounds. His excellent conformation became the standard for the Quarter Horse breed. He was greatly admired for his outstanding disposition and willingness. For years Jess Hankins advertised King as the cornerstone of the breed ... in retrospect, an apt description!

King had 658 foals, 218 performers from 23 crops.
35 race starters, 17 winners, 44 wins, 12 ROM.
183 show performers, 104 halter point-earners (1,088 pts);
107 performance point-earners (2,061 pts) 147 total point-earners with a total of 3,149 points

Oklahoma Star

Oklahoma Star foaled in 1915 in Oklahoma and raced in match races for many years throughout Oklahoma. He was bred by Tommy Moore of Oklahoma. For many years, Oklahoma Star was known simply as the ‘Tommy Moore Horse', after his breeder, owner, trainer and race jockey. Moore raced Star all over Oklahoma, matching him against all comers, usually riding Star himself because of fears that the opposing side would bribe the jockey. Because Moore was almost fifty years old and weighed about 150 pounds, this meant that Star didn't always win every race, but he won enough. Ronald Mason, who later owned Star, later told Robert Denhardt that the best race distance for Star was an eighth of a mile. Oklahoma Star was a mahogany bay in color, with just a white star on his forehead, a small white spot on his left foreleg, and a white sock on his left hind leg. He was an influential Quarter Horse stallion in the early days of the breed. Eventually, he was registered with the American Quarter Horse Association (or AQHA), as number 6 in the stud book.

Our Horses go back to Oklahoma Star through Oklahoma Star Jr.

Bert

Bert was one of the most influential sires in the early years of the American Quarter Horse Association. Foaled on March 24, 1934 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Bert was registered as number 227 with the AQHA. His registration entry gives his breeder as Bert Benear of Tulsa, Oklahoma and his color as brown. His sire, Tommy Clegg was a descendant of Peter McCue while his dam was descended from both Yellow Jacket and Yellow Wolf. In his prime, he stood 14.3 hands high and weighed close to 1150 pounds. Weimer claimed that he could "turn him out in the morning with the mares and drive out in the pasture in the evening with the pick-up and he will come to me as quick as I call him." He sired racehorses, roping horses, and all around ranch horses. He was the sire of eleven race starters, all of whom earned an AQHA Race Register of Merit.

Underwood's linebreeding program for Copperbottom bloodlines, Cutter Bill was linebred to Golden Chief, a descendant of Copperbottom, a Thoroughbred foaled in 1828. His sire, Buddy Dexter, was extremely inbred, being the product of a father-daughter mating.
